1 Corinthians 10:16–17

Paul reminds the Corinthian church that sharing the bread and cup joins believers to Christ and to one another. Though Christians are many and come from different backgrounds, they form one body because they share in one bread.

Devotional

Every person who comes to the Lord’s Table brings a story. Some stories include years of steady faith. Others include seasons of wandering. Some people come carrying joy. Others come grieving. Some come with confidence, while others are holding onto faith by what feels like a thread.

Yet everyone reaches for the same bread.

Paul wrote to a divided church. The Christians in Corinth had become skilled at sorting themselves into groups. They argued over leaders, spiritual gifts, status, and other differences. Even the Lord’s Supper had begun reflecting those divisions. Paul reminds them that one bread points toward one body.

Communion does not erase our stories. God does not make us identical. But Christ gives us a deeper identity than the things that usually separate us. That can be uncomfortable because it means the person we disagree with may still be our brother or sister in Christ. Hurt must be taken seriously, but bitterness cannot become our permanent home.

We also cannot receive the bread of grace while treating other members of Christ’s body as though they have no value. The same Christ who welcomes us welcomes people whose stories we may never fully understand.

One loaf is shared among people with many stories. Somehow Christ takes all of that difference and makes one body.

Action

Think of someone in the Christian community whose story is very different from yours. Instead of focusing on what separates you today, thank God for one way that person contributes to the body of Christ.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting people with different stories at the same table. Forgive me when I allow disagreement, hurt, preference, or pride to keep me from seeing others as part of Your body. Teach me to value the people You have joined to Yourself, even when I do not fully understand them. Where relationships need healing, give me courage and wisdom. Make Your Church a place where one bread becomes a visible sign of one grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day
Many stories meet at one table because Christ has made us one body.
