The disciples are in the boat because Jesus sent them there, yet they still encounter strong winds and rough water. Their struggle reminds us that hardship isn’t always a sign that we’ve wandered outside God’s will. Sometimes storms rise while we’re faithfully doing what Christ has asked us to do. Even when we can’t see Him clearly, Jesus hasn’t lost sight of us.

When Jesus comes across the water, the disciples mistake Him for another threat. Fear has a way of giving the worst possible meaning to what we don’t understand. Jesus speaks before He calms the storm, telling them to take courage because He is present. Their courage doesn’t depend on calm water. It rests in knowing that Christ has come near.

Peter steps out of the boat when Jesus calls him, but he begins to sink when his attention shifts from the Savior to the wind. Faith doesn’t require us to deny the storm or pretend we’re never afraid. It teaches us where to look when fear grows loud. When Peter cries out, Jesus immediately reaches for him. Peter’s faith falters, but Christ’s grace remains steady.

Our hope isn’t found in having perfect faith. It is found in a faithful Savior who sees us in the darkness, comes through the storm, and holds us when our strength fails. When Jesus says, “Come,” we can take the next faithful step toward Him, trusting that His hand is stronger than the wind.
